With all the wonderful dental tools at our disposal, an oft forgotten one in our repertoire is sugarless gum. Sugarless gum is rarely thought of as a tooth protector, but the truth is that it does have many properties that can potentially help keep your mouth safe from many of the dangers that seek to destroy it.

Chewing sugarless gum has numerous benefits beyond just freshening your breath. According to several studies on the topic, chewing sugarless gum for a period of twenty minutes, preferably after eating, can increase your mouth’s production of saliva, which has been shown to effectively remove plaque, and bacteria, and in turn help protect your teeth and tooth enamel against tooth decay and cavities.

Chewing sugarless gum has also been revealed to be effective in the prevention and treatment of heartburn and heartburn related symptoms due to harmful acids traveling up your esophagus. If these harmful acids were to reach your teeth and gums, they can erode away your tooth enamel and even annihilate your gum tissue. Chewing sugarless gum can help stimulate saliva movement to neutralize the acids that may be traveling up your esophagus as a result of heartburn.
