A Toothache Is Often a Warning Sign of a More Serious Problem

Posted .

Toothache pain emanating from a tooth or deep within the gums should never be taken lightly. In the majority of cases, this is often a warning sign of a much more serious oral health problem. To this end, our dentist, Dr. Gregory Dvorak, always recommends that patients seek timely care and treatment to prevent even more serious complications.

If your toothache is the direct result of a blow to the face or other oral trauma, it might have damaged the internal structures of the tooth. Sometimes this can even happen without any overt damage to the tooth enamel. If you have blood and debris in your mouth, you can rinse them away with lukewarm saltwater. This might also help soothe injured or sensitive tissues.

You can try to rub your gums with a topical oral analgesic for temporary relief of pain. If your toothache was caused by trauma and there is swelling in your lip or cheek, you can hold a cold compress to your face for 15 minutes at a time.

If your toothache is the result of an untreated cavity, you should seek timely treatment and repair at New Prague Gentle Dental Care. If the problem goes untreated for too long, it could lead to a serious infection in the gums.
