Sedation Dentistry: What You Should Know

Posted .

Do you ever hesitate to set up an appointment with the dentist? Sadly, this isn’t as uncommon as you might think, but did you know that individuals with dental anxiety have a hard time with the idea of visiting their dentist? In fact, for some people, even thinking about visiting the dentist can cause anxiety or a panic attack. Sadly, because of their anxiety, many people avoid scheduling appointments with the dentist, allowing any issues they have to become more serious. Fortunately, if you’re dealing with dental anxiety, sedation dentistry can help.

Sedations can actually be used to make a number of treatments easier. In fact, we can even use dental sedation during a routine checkup. Sedation is also useful for patients who suffer from shaking, nausea, or vomiting or for patients with a sensitive gag reflex.

Still, there are several levels of sedation you can consider. For example, we might recommend mild sedation, which only requires taking a pill. Oral sedation will be enough to help you relax, but won’t put you to sleep. We could also recommend stronger forms of sedation, which make may you drowsy. Still, you should stay awake during your appointment. Laughing gas is an example of this moderate sedation. If you choose either of these types of sedation, you’ll need someone to drive you home. Deeper forms of sedation aren’t usually suggested unless you need a more serious treatment.

If you don’t visit your dentist regularly—whether because of anxiety or not—you’ll be more likely to have tooth decay and gum disease and to suffer from premature tooth loss.
